Ochi Quest is like, my attempt at designing/making what is basically a 2d Link To The Past (which realistically is just somewhere between Maze of Galious and La-Mulana.)
Its an interesting design space! It's not quite like a metroidvania bc like, yeah you need to get "upgrades" but its a bit more like, open about order and how the world is built. Rather then having like, Areas, its an Overworld, Caves, and Dungeons, which feels distinct from typical metroidvania structure of like, Areas > Hubs > Corridors, if that makes sense. Now granted, my current design thought for Ochi Quest is that Dungeons have much more metroid-esque structure but that's fine because like you need literal keys so lol.
There's also the like difference between how "upgrades" work too, like, for Ochi Quest theyre more like tools for your toolbox. In like, Metroid, theyre upgrades to your core kit if that makes sense. Sidegrade vs Upgrade i suppose. Its a distinction that exists but feels hard to articulate.
Anyways im rambling at this point but I would like to finish Ochi Quest and i hope people like it.
