Thoughts on La-Mulana

Ok so to break this down, we need to establish what La-Mulana (and 2) are.

La-Mulana (we are gonna refer to 1 as this, which encompasses both the original and the remake; there ARE version differences that aren't just QoL stuff but a large part of that is due to the nature of the original version being a love letter to the MSX) is a game about exploring ruins.

"Ok that's not unique though?" What IS unique is the way the game presents puzzles. By and large, the puzzles are mostly just "do at position", "place a weight in a spot", and "bring item to NPC". You might be thinking "ok? But how's that different?" What's important here is that You Must Parse WHAT the Game Wants You to Do.

So in essence, the game revolves around scanning tablets which will tell you stuff (and in 2, you gotta talk to NPCs! They're important to remember!) and it is up to the player to decipher what the FUCK it means. Sometimes they're relevant to the room you're in, sometimes whatever is on it doesn't come up until end game!

Combine the above with the amount of the player has available to them means that it is VERY easy to get stumped on what to do. The game DEMANDS you respect it if you want to beat the game without any outside help. You MUST take notes, you MUST pay attention to what is in every room. YOU MUST USE THE MECHANICS PRESENT IN THE GAME TO CLEAR IT.

All in all, both 1 and 2 offer an experience in gameplay that is not found anywhere else and it drives me up a wall. You can absolutely beat the games without a guide or outside help! They're real fuckers to do but everything you need is in the game (There's also a manual for 1 that's REALLY helpful and you should use it with that as it is part of the game!)

anyways I would totally understand someone bouncing off of them because they're fucking brutal games in an unconventional way. You should absolutely try to beat the games without a guide. My real only tips are "YOU CAN SCAN EVERYTHING, DO SO" and "REVIEW EVERYTHING IN YOUR INVENTORY CONSTANTLY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE STUMPED"
