I'm far from fluent in Japanese but I'm quite certain they are pronouncing it ”がい” and not ”げい”
If it was げい it would be transliterated as "Gei" or in this case "Gey".
"Gay" is a valid transliteration of "Gei," which you can see in how the katakana ゲ is used to write english loanwords like "game (ゲーム) or literally "gay" (ゲイ). So I could see the argument if the character's name was Gei, but it's not.
All you're really saying is that there are even more ways to transliterate things. In any case, if "Gay", which can be pronounced in more than one way unless you're a hardline prescriptivist, was not a valid transliteration of ガイ it wouldn't have popped up in the show in the first place.
Anyway, this has been drawn out much longer than what I intended for my original post, which was just meant to be some light humor, so I'm gonna stop responding here.
