there's so many things in the world that are fucked! it's not actually productive for you to constantly think about those things if you can't do anything about them. it's one thing to be generally politically aware, and another entirely to torment yourself because you feel like a bad person if you don't

I think it also bears mentioning that, prior to the advent of the 24/hr news cycle (and later the internet as a whole), most people weren't being constantly bombarded by all the horrid shit happening in the world (unless you were In Politics, and even then not always).

People generally had a bit more time to process World Events for all of human history up until now! We are currently living in an age of unbridled access to Everything Everywhere All The Time, and if you feel like you're not engaging enough with the many axes of fucked-up-world-shit, I think it can be helpful to realize that, like, this is such a weird world to be in for us as people! We as a species aren't equipped psychologically to handle everything, and it can often be more beneficial (in my opinion at least) to rest and/or focus your efforts rather than burning out trying to look at the big picture.

The part that fucks me up the most are the "Being able to tune out X tragedy is a privilege" posts. And like, yes, do you think I don't know that? But just because having the ability to not self-harm is a privilege doesn't make using it wrong. Nobody is harmed by me taking a break. In fact, I'm better able to help people materially if I'm able to keep my mental health from collapsing.
