Just gonna chronicle a little history of my DF world that I'm digging through rn. It's v interesting imo.
So there's this Dwarven civilization called the Autonomous Trumpets, and early on in their development they had a bunch of wrestling competitions at their capital Crushdoor, and these two dwarves, Cog and Stakud, compete yearly, and eventually become lovers and then break up. Cog previously routinely beat Stakud, never losing a single match, but after their breakup Stakud does pretty well against other opponents, namely a dwarf named Shorast Handtours.
Jump ahead a few years, and Stakud starts taking part in other wrestling competitions in the cities of Tourcave and Roughsearch, cities of other civilizations, mostly for festivals. However, there's another wrestler at these competitions: A demon named Ludosm Whisperedseers, who previously besieged Roughsearch as leader of a Goblin civilization. Now, this is a bit weird, because demons generally don't hang out with dwarves, especially not in the cities they previously besieged, but the even weirder thing is that Stakud (remember Stakud?) actually befriends the demon Ludosm because of their shared love of athletics. And surprisingly, Ludosm actually doesn't attack another Dwarven civ for the next, like, 50 years, instead mostly journeying underground to tame various animals. Eventually Stakud actually starts winning in wreslting competitions against the demon.
After year 69 (nice) Shorast and Stakud also become friends over their shared love of athletics. At this point they have been wrestling annually for the past 60 years. Stakud has won every single time.
However, the very next year, disaster strikes. Stakud (and coincidentally, Cog) are both struck down in the defense of the city of Gemholy against another demon, Damid Secretiveriddle. Now, that's very sad, but the funniest thing to me is that that demon, Damid, now routinely takes part in the wrestling competitions at Tourcave (remember Tourcave?) against none other than Shorast Handtours, Stakud's rival of 60 years.
And wouldn't you know it, Shorast beats them every single time, at least for the next 26 years in a row. There's some justice to that, I think. And, the last time they've wrestled so far (year 99), Shorast came out on top.
But what about Ludosm? Well, they attack another dwarven civ in 70 (unrelated to Stakud's death) but are generally benign otherwise, even wrestling Shorast a few times in the years after Stakud dies. Finally, though, they too were struck down in the year 85 after a battle with (surprisingly) an Elven civ. What a world, where dwarves are friends with demons, and elves can defeat them. After that, Ludosm's goblin civilization was defeated time and time again by three other dwarven civs, including ones they previously had peace treaties with. And what civ has the last victory against them? Autonomous Trumpets, the civ that got me going down this rabbit hole in the first place.
