Hey, did you love 2015 indie game sensation UNDERTALE?

Did you know there was a free fan-made prequel (made with Toby Fox's blessing) that was in development for SEVEN YEARS that released recently? And that-

IT'S REALLY GOOD AND YOU SHOULD PLAY

"Claire", I hear you ask, "is this why you're crying at 1am?" to which the answer is OBVIOUSLY YES, I GOT PUNCHED RIGHT IN THE FEELINGS AND HAD A BLAST.

Short on time? It's about the same length as the original, so that's around 6-9 hours per playthrough.

"But Claire, I've not played Undertale, can I pick up this fangame?"

Friend. Comrade. This is is a problem that can be fixed - I can (and will) buy you Undertale.
I wouldn't recommend playing without having completed at least one of three main routes of Undertale for familirity with the setting and mechanics.

(and if you bounced off Undertale, this probably isn't for you - it's an incredibly fathful fan game, even with it's own twists and subversions)

"Okay that's great but are there bangers in the soundtrack?"

You absolutely better believe it! This OST? Filled with JUSTICE.

From remixes and reimaginings of familiar themes to a whole heck load of totally original tracks in the same style (and believe me, for a fangame, there's a lot - I think there's actually more "proper" tracks than the original game!) there's a lot to love here.

Might not quite be on quite the same level as the original's iconic and leitmotif-interwoven masterpiece of design, but it's up there.

Won't say too much more as like the OG, going in as blind as possible is the best way to play, but will say this fangame is of stellar quality.

Some stuff I'd argue it does better, some stuff worse, some a step to the side (a different approach) but overall it's an incredibly solid package, incredibly faithful to the spirit of the original with plenty of new ideas and new takes to keep things fresh and interesting.

Will see how my feelings are after some time to settle but currently would say as far as fan-games go for any piece of media, this is absolutely up there - a real labour of love that shines with creativity, where even the worst parts of it I have gripes with were still delightful enough to keep playing.

In conclusion:

PLEASE PLAY

Oh boy it's done??? I was waiting on it because it... Well to be honest when it started out, there were hundreds of such projects and most weren't good and I wanted to wait to see. Then I saw it again later, around 2020, and it was only partially done, so I didn't end up trying it... Anyway I will definitely try it out now.

Very understandable!

A lot of Undertale fan projects end up being at most a demo and often seem to just be difficult boss fights of their OCs + AUs + edgy headcanons rather than something keeping close in style and spirit to the original, which is not the case here.

There are SOME elements that are a touch divisive and some folks may feel stray a bit too far into Original The Character territory (which I can see where people are coming from, but personally disagree was actually a problem)...

...but for the most part I felt that on the whole, Undertale Yellow is something that could be mistaken for an official canon* prequel in terms of quality and worldbuilding

(* like there's some stuff even in the most canon-compliant route that definitely doesn't quite line up 100% right, but that's largely at the "I am obsessing over the exact timeline of the history of the underground based on contextual clues from the original game" level of nitty gritty lore analysis imo )

For my tastes, OCs are fine. I just want to see things where a lot of passion and skill are brought to bear. Canon is something that is much better in a community's hands than a sole creator. Knowing that this was made with some contact with the original annoying dog makes it my idea of the best of all possible kinds of project.

If I had a nickel for everytime someone made a Pokemon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition reference RE: Undertale Yellow, I'd have 2 nickels, etc

(I'm just upset I didn't think of that joke first, as Pokemon Yellow was my first Pokemon game)

I can neither confirm nor deny if Pikachu is in it - I've only played one route and know I definitely missed secrets on even that route, and there are references to other games in there

So for all I know, there could well be a Surfing Pikachu minigame most people have never seen ;)
