they must drill themselves ten levels deep in automatic responses, trying to game plan everything, and they still struggle to keep up with direct questioning. but they also know that they can safely avoid trouble with simple denial or blockading, so they must feel safe. who cares about looking like a fool as long as you say nothing "actionable"?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but "the bit" is just courting fascism. It comes across as an extremely inept veil dance but that ineptitude is the salespitch. Reactionaries share as a core belief that they shouldn't have to be accountable to others for their shitty beliefs, so a clip like this is basically an ad for Substack aimed at that segment of the social media user base.

I figured, I'm didn't mean to come across as calling you out. I actually agree that thinking of this as "a bit" is an accurate analysis. Most Internet-resident fascists are irony-poisoned trolls. It's not an accident that the universal facial expression of a neonazi on camera floats between a sneer and a Dreamworks smile. Best's efforts to shrug his way through this with a sort of "haha so casual haha yeah of course we care haha" energy is best understood as a performance.
