I've been watching a lot of videos about Smash Bros Melee history and gameplay recently and it's been very interesting but I literally just realized of the hundreds of names I've heard mentioned in these videos, I have not seen a single woman lol

A real shame.

Yeah, I looked into Smash a while a bit pre-covid, and one of the recurrent threads were people proudly touting their 'diverse audience,' which is to say they have Asian and Latino players but only dudes.

Then there was a whole fuss about one guy winning games with Bayonetta, who was regarded as 'too gay' to win.

Like I somehow only noticed this cause I've been seeing a lot of recent tournament footage showing pronouns and I was like "that's cool it's nice that most of the players are willing to show their pronouns, seems inclusive" then I went "...I've only ever seen he/him huh"

Magi rocks! Honestly in the local scenes I've been a part of, there's a good amount of girls (more than MTG, at least? it's a low bar, but there's usually a few around at larger locals in my personal experience), just not very many get to top level. Part of that is just by raw proportion of the playerbase, especially historically, but part of it also definitely comes down to the broader community being Fucking Weird about girls and women just dipping before too long.

I am extremely sure you're not the only one :P

I only hope things continue getting better for representation. Everyone's gotta work on it! And work on Not Being Weird To Women, which is apparently really hard lol
