Was reading the cohost financial update post and found the bit where they were talking about the problems with the ethics of relying on volunteer labor.

I think we're going to need to use that option. There has been too many things that have been on the slate for this site to get like eggbux and the public API (which would be a godsend) that just aren't getting done. No shade to the current devs, but you're going to need a bigger boat.

Now I know there's problems with that. I want to make a statement about one of the biggest ones.

  • "It's ethically questionable" for them to accept volunteer labor

I sincerely hope that anyone who is debating in good faith the ethicacy of a for-profit using volunteer labor can understand the difference in scenarios of a megacorp using volubteer labor and a group of 4 people who need help getting a service to a point of stability for survival using volunteer labor.

Is it ethically dubious for them to use it? Maybe. But also, I'd like for the site to survive and I'm going to be pissed if it goes down because people were more interested in quibbling about someone getting a minor advantage rather than accepting slight imperfection.

Apologies for the slightly rambling rant, but I wanted to get that off my chest.
