At the moment I'm slowly building out a PBtA game centered around a wild-west inspired fantasy world I've been writing in some form or another for years. This week's focus has been on mechanics for different campaign types. The players take on the role of a band of vagrants going around a world called Emblem to find work, usually helping people. The campaign types dictate just small scale plot lines that can be handled in a few sessions before being chained in to something else. Here are the types I have so far:

  • Treasure Hunt
  • Settlement Building
  • Bounty/Monster Hunting
  • The Trail

Players will be able to spend tokens or points on helping to build out the campaigns, but I still want them to be largely DM led, making the game friendlier to players used to more traditional ttrpgs. The best example of this is with The Trail.

This campaign type is essentially point a to point be, either seeking a place out or reaching a destination you picked ahead of time. Before the campaign begins, players throw their tokens in to help dictate the number of sessions it might take, the obstacles they'll face, or boons they'll receive. At the start of each session, players can use any tokens remaining to throw more obstacles if they feel like being a pill, or if the characters are hurting, to pull things up like a town or caravan where you can rest and resupply.
