I love that series but I would 100% just delete Amuro and make Sayla the main character.

the visible smudges on the animation cels are kind of janky but also extremely charming in the reminder that actual people made every moment of this show by hand

I've seen people bring up that you can compare 0079 to shows made in the early/mid-80s and see the improvement in photocopier tech by how the animation looks. You get softer underlines in later shows, compared to the rougher lines in older shows like 0079, because photocopiers got better at reproducing fine detail when they copied the pencils onto cels before painting.

I dunno, I find the physical tech behind this older animation really interesting!

it's extremely weird to make a whole show about space Nazis and then hard pivot to "also there actually is an intrinsically superior race of superhumans emerging" at the very end

It's hard to talk about newtypes without incorporating everything that happens in Z/ZZ/CCA, but I'll try: I think the show's very skeptical of newtypes as a "superior race of humans"! Points here include:

• Ideological Newtypism being older than Newtypes themselves, with the emerging phenomenon of psychics being immediately coopted by nazis to say "oh yeah this is a characteristic of our nationality" (more of a movie thing than a show thing);
• The nazis being wrong about this: Newtypes include people outside of the colonies both in space (Chalia Bull) and on Earth (Amuro); they also only started to emerge as the war broke out and not in the entire time since the establishment of space colonies - so clearly the idea of them being a product of humanity venturing into space - or of being side-3-citizen-spacenoids - is wrong;
• The mutual understanding fostered by Newtypes not actually resulting in a superior world, and instead contributing to better giant killer robots; this is what Char is talking about during the swordfight
