I realized today that there's a lot more movies on my letterboxd watchlist than a year ago. Something that's very normal for a lot of people I'm sure, but mine was actually going down for a while now! Having an online film club where we watch movies or shows 6 days a week, it gives me the opportunity to cross between 1-4 movies off every week. I think for a while last year i was in the 400s... I kinda have to wonder if the thing that truly bothers me and some other people when it comes to beholding the volume of unfinished backlogs, is the futility of wanting to see everything a medium has to offer. If I'm allowed to be morbid for a moment: There are probably hundreds if not thousands of steam accounts from people who died out there with hundreds of unplayed games on them they purchased before their death, but never got to experience. I guess that's just the way it's gonna be for most of us. Having access to all this culture forces us to choose what of it is worth our limited time on earth. That's why we fill those lists, to remember the stuff we wanna check out, before it's too late. But as long as we stay interested in a particular medium, there's always more added in the future, always more to uncover from the past. There's an existential horror in what the kids would probably call: The hyper-object that is the whole of all media created by humans. Oh how harsh the ills of post-modern humans with access to the internet! The medieval peasant never knew the flavor of the dorito chip, and most of them probably never knew what choice paralysis was as they died from the flu in a small village they had never left in their entire life.
