this sucks ass, don't use the apple store to support your favorite creators, subscribe or resubscribe directly through your browser

this also affects supporters because patreon will be dynamically raising prices on ios to offset fees. so it will literally be more expensive. no one wins.

expect all other processors with ios apps to be affected if they haven't been yet.

buried in there is that Patreon will also force every creator to their Subscription billing (you're charged on the date you sign up) instead of the old system (you're charged on the first of every month) by November 2025 because it is in conflict with how the iOS app operates wrt these policies and i'm very annoyed! i don't want the new system, the old system works for me because of how i run my shit.

deeply annoyed that these sites constantly shift this aggressively and i just can't do shit about it. at least this is apple's fault primarily this time but fuck, man. i'm so tired.

anyway patreon should add a feature that lets ios users see a pop up that says THERES NO 30% FEE ON DESKTOP if they try to sub through the app forgot you can't do this

my actual wish is for patreon to just turn the iOS app into browse-only. just wholesale remove the ability to subscribe through there. if there are iOS app users, they know what patreon is, they know how the service operates, and they are likely smart enough to open a browser afterwards and sign up there. and if not, well, i'd rather eat that loss than let apple take 30% in either option.

but i also know patreon will not do this because they are not a Big Service. no matter the option i pick, patreon takes a cut from subscriptions through iOS and they're not going to just remove a vector of income to do some overall good for creators and its users. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

in reply to @erica's post:

Wasn't Amazon's solution to this just not letting purchases be allowed in app? Patreon has to be getting an unusually high amount of their traffic through their iOS app so as to force them to keep payments on said app with the fees, its the only way for this to actually make sense. Otherwise this seems financially wasteful.

I really hate the "bill when you're signed up" system too, I actually want one lump bill at the beginning of the month. Makes total expenses easier to track.

... which I guess is the point huh?

My bank gets weirded out when I make multiple PayPal purchases in a week, and calls me to make sure I am doing it myself. Which is not a bad thing, imo, but imagine this with someone who has 15+ $1 tier subs on Patreon, and is sending payments multiple times a month with the fees and taxes involved.

Fun (e.g. terrible) fact: they can't add that pop up, its against the Terms of Service.

That's basically why Fortnite got kicked off of phones, because they put up a thing saying "go buy this shit online".

The only thing you can do is put a thing that says "we do not allow signups in the app, sorry" (this is what Spotify does on Apple), but you can't say why you don't allow it or redirect people to where they can do it. It's stupid!

I saw speculation on bluesky that the move to subscription billing will also force grandfathered accounts (5% platform fee) onto new plans that charge standard platform fees (8%?) since changing any aspect of your plan (e.g. move to subscription billing) effectively abandons the grandfathered rate

They haven't said that that's the case and is (currently) just conjecture based on what happens if a creator manually does that change. I've asked for clarification but so far in their Q&A they've avoided answering anything that makes them look bad/like liars, so

just to circle back on this, they provided an answer and no people will not get kicked off.

Hi aurahack. Thanks for your question. Switching to subscription billing won’t kick you off the Founders pricing plan and it won’t move you over to the standard 8% platform fee.

hilariously, starting a subscription from the ios app is already incredibly difficult, because nsfw artists are hidden from search so there's no way to actually go to their page and subscribe lol

(Also anecdotally: I do actually use the ios app a lot, instead of relying on emails/browser. But only because apple makes Going To A Website significantly harder than Opening An App, which is a second, completely unrelated bit of monopolist ratfucking)

I know that most (non-cohost) services are all-in on apps and so they can't really just make the website work well on a phone and say "use the website". But I really, really wish they'd just do that here and stop accepting money via the app. I hate what Apple's doing, but I also hate that Patreon are happy to stay dependant on the app.

but i also know patreon will not do this because they are not a Big Service

Why would they even do this if they were a big service? Presumably they’ve determined that they make more money with an iOS app than without, so…
