Been thinking about how large social media platforms managed to cause tremendous damage in convincing countless of talented people, that something must be fundamentally wrong with them, because they just weren't as proficient at exploiting these platforms for their benefits, as others were.
There's nothing wrong with not being "good" at attracting an audience, or not being interested in it. Platforms just want you to believe the opposite, because they need the constant flow of "content" to sell itself to advertisers and each well meaning guide that talks about how you too can become a champion at twitter, only funnels more and more people into this treadmill. It's the same with any other kind of capitalist system, really. In order for a handful of people to benefit from, it needs a large population of people who are drawn in by its promises, only to get nothing back.
I might be too optimistic here, but maybe with twitter collapsing, there's a chance to divest ourselves from these kinds of platforms and create something that doesn't require everyone to turn themselves into a wellspring of endless content.
