Animation Lead on Wanderstop! She/Her & Transgenderrific! Past: Radial Games, Gaslamp Games

okay I finally played frostpunk after years of assuming it would be super My Game but it turns out I don't enjoy this at all. Idk. It feels like the correct way to play is to already know every aspect of the economy in advance, and that's.. not really fun to me. Like Against the Storm does "vaguely roguelikey citybuilding" WAY more interestingly because I feel like I have room to strategize rather than that my failures are because I didn't already know every detail of the economy design.

It's so weird that it presents as a "tough choices" strategy game, but it plays like a puzzle game that wants perfect knowledge to optimize the outcome. Especially since the exploration spots and timing of campaign plot events are (I think?) deterministic. It's so weird that the game feels like less than the sum of it's parts instead of more.

I enjoyed Frostpunk as a weeklong puzzle-solving experience, but it’s an incredibly inflexible game. Lots of trial and error, mostly on the first campaign. And once you get through the main campaigns, you can easily persist on the endless mode with little trouble. I was definitely willing to look beyond that for the atmosphere and such, and because it’s decently unique in its premise.
I’m hoping Frostpunk 2 is more open-ended. I like difficult choices but not false and fatal ones.
