seeing a post scroll by about public domain childrens' chars getting horror games because it's easy to defend from a copyright perspective and that may well be true but I think the other thing is just that "soothing childhood thing is made scary" is maybe one of the most obvious conceits of all time and is almost certainly the first thing most people think of when they consider taking those elements out of their existing context. Like it's so much of a gimmie that I was drawing edgy winnie the pooh in a scythe and cloak in high school. It's very low effort and feels like you made something novel, even if it's maybe the least-novel actual response.

I feel like the interesting takes on this stuff usually come after the reactionary/kneejerk wave that is mostly going for a sense of shock factor
