I feel like in 3-4 years I'm going to become the kind of person who grouses about remembering when metroidvanias were platformers instead of just "dark souls but 2d" and everyone is going to react to that the same way they do when I insist that roguelikes are turn based dungeon crawlers

yes, and also generally specifically feature dodge-rolling with iframes, lengthy dodge-focused boss fights with slow windup attacks, limited health that is restored in specific locations that reset the area around you, and other hallmarks of the souls games

I think that although Dark Souls deserves a more than healthy share of that blame, it's part of the broad trend of indie metroidvanias having 4/5ths "vania" with bloated RPG elements and linear hallways filled with teleporters rather than using cohesive and dense map design, and only 1/5th "metroid" i.e. platforming focus with a variety of tools that help with both combat and traversal. Also at this point it's just as likely that they're blindly copying Hollow Knight without bothering to trace the lineage of the design decisions further back.
