Animation Lead on Wanderstop! She/Her & Transgenderrific! Past: Radial Games, Gaslamp Games

  • it's quite fun
  • it's close enough to the original that I think your opinion on it is going to depend on how much you liked the original
  • I'd rank it as Iterative++ in terms of sequels, in that the core gameplay loop is functionally identical but they've tried to put tweaks everywhere in the details (new charge-up moves, sprinting, mana meter, more-customizable power progression, etc). It feels different enough that I can't claim it's the same game by any means but you'd have a hard time characterizing it as anything but a follow-up
  • as usual everyone is a thirst trap

It's got four zones and a final feeling last boss fight, but it's hard to say beyond that - a number of characters have placeholder art and the kind of constant new lines you might be used to seeing when picking up boons etc are fairly thin on the ground. There's a pretty decent amount but it's definitely noticable that there's much less dialogue currently compared to the first game.

i saw a friend play a lot of it and while theres nothing i really saw outside of like, "the main characters whole deal and all of the narrative stuff" that doesnt feel like it could have been stapled on to the first hades, but the things that they choose to do with every zone feel fun and a lot less of a retread? it feels like theres a lot more like "zone mechanics" even if a lot of is flavoring.

that said its like, insane that hades one didnt have any gardening in retrospect given its like, "every run is time passing and its about growing n shit" that mechanic while small is the most like "oh yeah that was /missing/"

On the one hand, it is kind of a shame this is the case since ALL their previous games went in very different directions from each other, which I loved. However, looks a current game landscape, I 100% do not blame them for picking something safer. I'm sure when I get around to it, I will still enjoy their high quality, but I look forward to a day when they get a chance to flex their experimental muscles again.
Of their games, Pyre is probably the one that sticks with me the most, despite all of its warts. Even even compared to their other games, I think Pyre has the most frustrating elements, yet I still appreciate it the most. I don't need a Pyre 2, but I do want another experience like that which is so unique with their authorship.
