Animation Lead on Wanderstop! She/Her & Transgenderrific! Past: Radial Games, Gaslamp Games

I play a LOT of sim/builder demos every nextfest and I feel like the one thing a lot of devs in this genre absolutely HAVE to learn to do better with is the excruciatingly slow intro stage where you're just building one of each building and making zero meaningful decisions. It's a momentum killer every single time. Give me something to think about at least.

god, i hate when they do this, and so so many games do, and it's just ... why? the grandaddy of city builders had zero tutorial whatsoever and it sold in the bajillions before EA murdered it, so why do game designers think i need an hours-long tutorial stage where it handholds me through every single mechanic?

I don't think this is done unintentionally, I think these games favour the feeling of progression from 'slow and painfully simple' to 'fast and complicated' Definitely something to work on though, because slow doesn't need to mean boring.
