Animation Lead on Wanderstop! She/Her & Transgenderrific! Past: Radial Games, Gaslamp Games

I wasn't gonna bring it up in public at the time I'd played the demo but since it's being discussed wrt wholesome games; another flavour of weird orientalism I see way too often in indie and it's exhausting is "lol japanese accents are inherently funny", which is just, about as blatantly racist as you can get and yet I keep seeing people doing it???

example in point I can throw on the pyre bc the studio has shut down: "Chenso Club", a game made by a swedish white dude that you launch it up and a voice actor screams "CHAINSAW CLUB" at you in an awful faux-japanese accent. And then the rest of the game is an unremarkable platformer-roguelike. Like. Why did you decide you needed to make sure the very first thing your players saw was explicit and pointless racism???? idk it seems so conceptually easy to me not to make the basis of your game "being fucking weird about other cultures", and yet

The thing that always makes me roll my eyes is when indie games not made in Japan put Katakana in their logo... like, it's not weird to be inspired by games from Japan, they were made and exported here en masse, but I feel like roleplaying that your game actually IS from Japan in the game itself is very sketchy

Like I clearly made Petal Crash with the intention of it being a Japanese-style arcade puzzle game from the 90s that would look at home among its would-be contemporaries but I didn't put "ペタル・クラッシュ" under the title and say it's from Happygame Funsoft or something
