I think i would probably stop at 4 in case there’s a site that decides to go with more, but… yeah
for a minute Discord was showing up to four for Twitter on... it was either only mobile or only desktop, I forget which. didn't last of course.
Everybody I know leans on FXTwitter or VXTwitter to display all four images at once. The downside, and I suspect Discord is to blame for this, is it can only display them as a collage, IE as a single image. This becomes especially bad when the images aren't all the exact same aspect ratio: the collage has to fill that dead space with a heavily blurred out version of the image in question.
I would take first image + image count but I assume that's too complicated for Discord's lamentably irritating UX people
to be entirely fair i think the chat app doesn't really decide this, the site being linked to provides opengraph preview cards to tell it how to show the preview
which is why they all get it wrong, because it's actually twitter or whoever telling them to only display the one image (and why things like fxtwitter can work around it)
Discord + cohost is the only time I've ever seen that combo work. Not Discord and other sites. Not other chat apps and cohost. Just those two.
...actually I guess iMessage works too, but I don't link to cohost via iMessage that often
