Magnolia𧚠quietly opened the door and peeked inside, startled to find that the silent study was in fact occupied. Seeing that sheâd already been noticed, she quickly apologized. âE-excuse me! I didnât realize you were still here! Iâll just come back later, andâŚâ
âNo no, please, come in, come in,â LĂĄpizđ beckoned to the maid, who reluctantly did so. âI really do need a little break, you know, some company, a nice chat⌠This work is killing meâŚâ
âWhatâs the matter?â Magnolia asked. âMaybe I can help.â
âYes, perhaps. Itâs nothing terribly important, though, so no pressure. Itâs just thatâŚâ LĂĄpiz let out a sigh. âI⌠canât think of anything to write. I have this whole study here in the Castle all to myself, but the ideas just arenât coming. People like our stories, you know? And I used to write lots of them. Transformation stuff, bits of game lore⌠Uh⌠That was mostly it, but stillâŚâ
âI seeâŚâ said Magnolia. âYou know, I usually try to stay out of all that, myself⌠If I wind up in a story, who knows, some kind of adventure (or, more likely, a transformation) could happen that makes it harder for me to do my workâŚâ
âAh, yes, thatâs true,â LĂĄpiz said with a small laugh. âBeing a main character is pesky business. I generally reserve such roles for those of us who can take it, like Beryl and GaleâŚâ
âA-actually,â continued Magnolia, âitâs the entire reason why I was being so quiet earlier. I was trying to avoid ending up in a storyâŚâ
LĂĄpiz raised an eyebrow. Sheâd thought that she was the only one to see things like that. âWhat do you meanâŚ?â
âWell, obviously I messed up, and you saw me, and called me in here, and⌠here we are. In a story.â Magnolia frowned, uncertain. âWe⌠are in a story right now, arenât we?â
LĂĄpiz smiled. âArenât we always?â
âI-I supposeâŚâ she said. âNot that Iâd know anything about the nature of perception being a narrative that we tell ourselves. Iâm just a maid, after allâŚâ The writer chuckled at that, though Magnolia was still deep in thought. âYou know⌠if this is a story⌠then maybe it can be yours. Maybe this is the answer to your writerâs block.â
âMaybe!â said LĂĄpiz. âBut⌠who would wanna read this? It hasnât been terribly exciting.â
Magnolia looked around the study, at the walls, up at the ceiling. She was nonetheless unable to see you. âWell, if our words are even happening at all right now⌠then clearly someone would, right? They got this far.â
LĂĄpiz smiled and sighed. âYes, thatâs true, very clever. Perhaps we should wrap it up now, though. Any more silly little meta stunts youâd like to do first?â
âHmm⌠Just one,â said Magnolia, giggling a little. âWhen our names are first said, you should write in our proxy emojis too. I donât think theyâve gotten a chance to know you yet.â
