a blue-tongue skink was my plan when I was dating a woman who could not handle me having bugs in the house on purpose for any reason. They're omnivores and can get their protein requirements from cooked eggs and meat, no identifiable little guys needed.
back when i had rats i realized the just. base-nature joy that comes with giving your little guy some of what you're eating. like, now i'm an early human sharing kinship with a wild beast who works with me for our mutual survival...
