i think going forward i'm only going to make write-ups for maps that i particularly enjoy or feel like i have something to say about, or if i write a full blown review and stuff like that. doing little blurbs for every map isn't really a bad thing per se, but i remembered that I used to do this elsewhere for singular doom maps, and... it ends up making it feel more like homework or a job, trying to force words for something that i liked (but didn't really have anything substantial to say about), disliked (but not in an especially interesting way), or felt neutral about.
anyway, this is for A Blaze in the Northern Sky, by Stickflip
write-up below:
I played this this morning and streamed it over Discord to a few friends, and well... this was a real experience, quite literally climbing a larger than life tree, which by the time I had reached the top, made me cripplingly aware of how small I am, both in the game itself and in the greater scale of life, the world, the universe, etc. I imagine some of this was due to having to walk out onto extended branches to pick up ammo and health, and looking downwards was a reminder of just how high up I was. Descending the tree after reaching the peak was.... a very fitting clusterfuck.
Perhaps it's because I've also played them a lot, but scaling this tree was oddly reminiscent of descending through The Great Hollow in Dark Souls, or exploring the Haligtree in Elden Ring. Ascending this tree, however, was not a melancholic experience in a dying world.
shot and anecdote about the shot:

During the stream, when we first saw these faces, one friend said "it's like mount rushmore but actually cool", and another friend I showed it to later said "good ending mount rushmore". Great minds think alike.
