so i bought a cheap turntable off amazon, thought it looked nice and had a ton of features including speakres it came with and options for fm radio, bluetooth, aux in, cds, etc.

however the turntable part sounds like fucking shit. everything else is good, the record player is super duper quiet and turning it up also increases the standard record player sounds, which makes the music sound VERY bad bc its buried under scratching and muffles and static.

does anyone have an recs for a good casual inexpensive record player i could purchase for my living room? pls n ty xoxo

if you wanna buy new, I'd just go for an AT-LP60X. audiophiles will poo-poo them, but I had one* for years and it worked plenty well enough. plays records just fine, adjustable speeds, good stuff.

if you're willing to buy used, look for stuff from Sony, Technics, Akai, and other such reputable manufacturers. avoid anything with this mechanism. note that if you buy used, you will almost certainly need to buy a phono pre-amplifier as well. most older stereo amplifiers/receivers have one built in, but if you want an independent pre-amp I would recommend the Art Pro DJPRE II, which can usually be found pretty cheaply used on eBay.

I would also strongly recommend investing in some kind of cleaning kit, especially if you have a lot of old and used records - something like this will get the job done just fine. a clean record and stylus make a big difference in sound quality.

*well, I had an LP60, the model that preceded the 60X. I hear the 60X is slightly better.

Adding to what others have said, your best options are to grab a used turntable or grab an AT-LP60(X); when you first get into vinyl you really just want a turntable that sounds Fine and doesn't scratch your records. AT's got you covered for that!

My major suggestion though is look for used gear. Most vintage turntables are pretty cheap and easy to repair, even if the internals are all gunked and fucked up. Same for speakers (though to a lesser extent)! You can visit your local record store and ask around, check ebay, etc. Sweetwater and Reverb might also have some stuff, maybe. If you can find a used AT-LP60 it should be somewhere around 60-80 USD, last I checked. Might've gone up. New ones are 120-130 USD ish IIRC?

For speakers, I recommend miccas. Grab a pair of their bookshelf speakers (they were just on sale on amazon, might still be!), a preamp (any will do, really), an amp, and plug it all together.

Before you buy anything though, EmG is right that you should check about the preamp situation though. Without one it'll sound really rough, that might just be your issue.
