I have had too many SD cards die in my phones over the years, I haven't lost my photos but that's because I make backups. Phones have plenty of good, reliable storage built in now, we don't need microSD and it has real drawbacks.
I feel like they should have them in principle but my only phone with expandable storage had so little built-in storage that I couldn't install more than like 3 apps at a time anyway*, so I assume it would end up an excuse to make budget phones much worse while only saving like $50 on an $800 flagship
*I think there was a way to hack it to be able to but at the very least it was a hassle over some weird technical bullshit
That was the way it was early on for sure, phones stored almost nothing in internal memory except their OS. Even now the default path to user files and data on Android is /sdcard/ even when it is internal memory.
