I get being offended that your son was scared you'd hit him. But it's natural? Even if you've never hit him, he knows violence exists, he know people can be violent when they're angry. It's not a personal thing, I don't think it can be helped.
Not sure saying "I would die for you!" is helping either. But she's having a very bad time! I'm trying to be sympathetic.
