Years ago for class we collaborated with a classmate and pitched a pixel style choose-your-own-adventure book! It was an Alice in Wonderland retelling called "What Alice Found Here". The aesthetics of the project were heavily inspired by Jan Švankmajer's 1988 Something From Alice film.

Alice (1988) is a Czech dark surreal fantasy film that combines live action and stop motion animation to retell Alice in Wonderland. I watched this movie for an animation history class and its beautiful imagery has stuck with me ever since. I wanna show some pics and talk about it a little!

Whenever Alice shrunk to her smaller self in this movie she was portrayed by this porcelain doll with an unchanging expression. Also I loved the little skull guys, I had to draw them in our project haha
The movie is mostly well known for its horrifying scissors-wielding taxidermy White Rabbit! Nightmare fuel! https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/wye3c3b2q64.png The power actually went out while I was watching the movie 😅 I was so freaked out that I thought it was the White Rabbit coming for my soul.
I think there's something about the use of surreal stop motion dolls and bodies that feels just right for Alice in Wonderland. It's a story about a girl's imaginative dreams and there was always a threat of death throughout the original book. The writer/director said that while other film adaptations interpreted Alice as a fairytale with a clear moral, he saw it as an expression of a chaotic dream.
If you're looking for something out of the ordinary and nonsensical, I'd recommend giving this film a try!
