IIRC, Rally is one of those sports with a significantly higher rate of injury in fans than competitors. It's... mad.
I'm from Baja California where the Baja 1000 is held and while I'm not very familiar with that particular race or rally culture I've heard stories that definitely confirm that some of the people who watch those races are kinda insane.
like standing under dirt ramps to see the cars jumping over you kind of insane
it is only insane if they repeated that behavioural pattern while expecting a different outcome! pointing one finger up, grinning madly
Yeah the 80s were wild. It's much improved today but still just about every year you'll see fan videos of a car losing it in a ditch and rolling through a field where a bunch of spectators were sitting. They typically get away though.
Related, rally is amazing and the best motorsport, just not for spectating
I was skeptical of Dirt Rally after I realized it’s mostly all time trials but that skepticism didn’t last very long
I believe this kept happening through the 90s in some places, primarily Portugal. The difference is when the stages got too crowded they started canceling them, because someone realized it was a liability.
