Tonight I'm watching The Earrings Of Madame De... on Criterion Channel, one of the top 100 movies ever made according to the Sight and Sound list. It's now sitting at a tie for #90, but when the list first emerged it was all the way at #5! Despite it's pedigree I never actually had heard of it before this week, but the writeup from the only Substack I am ever gonna follow The Reveal convinced me to check it out. Really wonderful, I am not that fluent in French cinema other then some Renoir, Godard, Tati, y'know the usual film school classics. But recently I read a book on suspense that referenced a lot of French cinema and that, along with reading along with Keith and Scott getting reacquainted with Robert Bresson has made me really want to close that gap.
