Just learned about Famicom Detective Club and am intensely interested in checking it out. I found a English translated rom for The Girl Who Stands Behind but haven't found anything for The Missing Heir besides the Switch remake that costs money. I understand that The Girl Who Stands Behind is a prequel, can I play that first and will everything make sense? Or should I bite the bullet and just play the Switch versions for the best continuity?

I played both the switch remakes when they came out and adored them. From what I recall you should be fine to play The Girl Who Stands Behind without playing The Missing Heir, at most you'll miss some minor connections if my my memory is right, it was also the stronger of the two games since they had learned stuff from The Missing Heir.
I don't know enough about roms of the Famicom version to know exactly what the Switch version offers other than better graphics.
