POOM rules, but I think my favorite bit of it that a lot of people overlook in the wake of its incredible technical accomplishments is that it's not all spriterips - all the assets were redrawn to make the most of PICO-8's technical quirks. They're lower-res, lower-color, and have their own unique little charms that elevate the entire experience IMHO.
The programmer has also done some pretty crazy versions of Virtua Racing and Another World and continues to work on all sorts of mad science using this goofy little fictional microcomputer.
Entirely unrelated, but speaking of PICO8, if you're reading this you are now legally mandated to buy Tower of Archeos, a very good shape-matching puzzler that was prototyped in PICO8 and utterly fucks, even if I may well have been the only person on this rock who bought it with dollars. (You can fix this! You can make the world right again!) The dev went on to make Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate, which also owns and has an incredibly generous demo.
I'm rambling at this point and I don't care. Buy some good-ass indie games.
