Shirobako is a great show about creatives in the anime industry. It has a wide cast of too many characters (affectionate) involving production assistants, animators, 3DCG artists, writers, directors, project managers, voice actors, sound designers, concept artists, and more. And the coolest thing? Each one of these characters have multiple unique outfits; these are people who change their clothes every day. This actually isn't common in media at all, especially animated media.

In real life, a person's clothes say a lot about them. We all know this, I'm not going to dwell on it. Characters in movies, tv, and games tend to have an iconic outfit that represents them. From superhero costumes to the outfit of any character from Ed, Edd, and Eddy. Even in settings where there is a uniform or a dress code, people find ways to be unique; wearing a sweater over a school uniform or wearing the uniform's shirt unbuttoned for example. But Shirobako goes above and beyond.

I'm being kind by collapsing the rest of this long post, but I will not be kind about telling you to hit Read More, you coward!

I love when you can tell a show is being really thoughtful with its characters' fashion!

In Shirobako's case, there's also the extra layer of that making a lot of sense because so many characters are so directly based on actual people from the industry: https://blog.sakugabooru.com/2018/04/30/shirobakos-secrets-the-most-deliberate-anime-industry-references/

Your observation about Midori's suit is so good and makes so much sense too, that's such a cool detail!

Holy cow! I knew a lot of character designs were based on real people, but I didn't know about this article about it! Thanks for sharing!

And yeah, Shirobako is one of my favorite shows. Has been since it aired. So much effort put into the details. Even outfits aside, each character's desk has a lot of personalization and unique charm. It wasn't until I was assembling screenshots for this post that I noticed Yuka has really cute a heart-shaped mouse pad. This could be a whole other post! There's just so much here.

yeah! i feel like maybe some of that comes from this really fun sort of self-indulgence from Shirobako's staff, where they what to show off aspects of themselves or people they like/respect through that sort of detail.

also, glad you liked the article! sakuga blog is a great place to read about anime production stuff!

I’ve been wanting to make a post like this for years! Shirobako is one of my all time shows and its eye for fashion was genuinely one of the things that started to break my 19 year old T-shirt-and-slacks baby self out of her shell. I still think about the lolita as armor lines all the time.

For sure! It left an impact on me when it first aired and, after watching it recently with some friends, it has inspired me once again! Just the ability to really express yourself and be perceived a certain way on purpose, both are powerful ideas. And on top of that, the show is also just rad. Has done a lot to influence my fashion my life, haha.
