I remember one time talking to my grandmother about Liberace, and she was very insistent that, even though it seems so obvious now in retrospect, at the time everybody really did take it at face value he was a straight man, and it really was a scandal when he was painted as gay by the tabloid press in the 80s.
Anyway, any time I listen to literally anything by The Village People I think of that conversation.
