The intro of the game has her in a baseball cap so it can be "gender androgynous" until you choose what gender you wish to play as, so canonically Girl Link is a lesbian.

So these games were released for the Satellaview, a very unique Super Famicom peripheral that I never heard of until last night. It was a team up with a company named St.GIGA, an extremely strange radio station. which was able to download games via a satellite connection during certain times of the day. A Satellaview game cartridge with the letters BDX on it attached to a Super Famicom The idea was that these games would be "broadcast" similar to a TV show. So Ancient Stone Tablets was only able to be played from like 4PM to 7PM because that's when the satellite link would be strong enough to send Girl Link to your television screens. It also allows a leaderboard system, so some games would be able to handle tournament play and, in some cases, live voice acting?! Even Ancient Stone Tablets had a points system where you would win prizes if you were the global leader in rupees and whatnot.

The plot of the game is it's a direct sequel to Link to the Past but also an isekai. You play as a young hero (boy or girl) who is wisked away to Hyrule to help Sahasrahla's failbrother Aginah recover the stone tablets to defeat Ganon, or whatever. Text from the game's intro, a dialogue between Zelda and Aginah:
Zelda: "It is strange, but there appear to be no wounds. We shall allow this youth to rest here. It has been a long time, Aginah. You look well."
AGINAH: "You are as beautiful as ever, Princess Zelda."
ZELDA: "Teehehe...While we speak of such things, I have not seen old Sahasrahla recently..."
AGINAH: "My elder brother warned me that danger surrounds Hyrile. He went in search of Link, the Hero."
ZELDA: "Link, the Hero!" The game itself is just Link to the Past. Same sprites, same map (with far less difficult dungeons), same deal. The big difference is two things:

  1. The game is split up into four parts, each with a one hour time limit.
  2. There is a cyron on the bottom where Aginah gives you updates and hints Otacon style.

Text reading "Uhh, isn't that a Zora? Young One, you must beware of Zoras! So over the hour certain events or abilities will be granted to you. For instance, at one point it starts raining, which means bombs don't work and Zoras pop out everywhere to attack. Or you'll get unlimited arrows, or the ability to use Bombas or things like that.

What's also cool is because of the time limit, certain events are triggered not by your progress but by the minute. For example, in the game at one point the cyron goes off saying Zelda needs help in the glade below the Earth Temple. You go, defeat the octorocks, and then take Zelda back to the castle. Then you go back to whatever the hell it was you were doing. It's a cool premise, the idea of broadcast gaming.

End screen of day 1:
AGINAH: "How are you doing, young one? Do you tire? It looks as though you were able to help Princess Zelda.
ZELDA: "It seems that you're striving to be a hero in bravery as well. Thank you for rescuing me. You're the only one left who can help us. Though your task is difficult, please, don't give up!

I'm having trouble getting the save state to carry over from day one to day two so I only scratched the surface here but this is such an interesting idea. It definitely is just Link to the Past: Remix Edition but once I figure out how to get day 2 running I am all in.

in reply to @MayaGay's post:

The one at GDQ is actually a remake of the original NES Zelda with SNES graphics, a Mario All Stars kind of thing. But similiarly, that game was also split up over 4 weeks so you could only play 2 dungeons at a time for a couple hours a day. I want to try that one next but I am horrible at Zelda 1 so I wanted to see the Link to the Past one first.

the patch they showed off at GDQ's that Third Quest patch that changes it from the time based events to progression based events iirc? also that patch swaps the BS-X Avatar for boring-ass Link and thats fine and all for the people who just want an ordinary Zelda: Abridged Version but the appeal of girl link is too strong come ON

I get why the ones without time based events exist cause, like, they just play better. But without the time element you kind of lose the magic of the entire endevour to begin with. Such a cool concept.

I've only played teh original BS Teh Legenf of Belda, meowf, which is a remake of zelda 1. I remember there being a few romhacks thaf combined teh weeks into a single rom, nyeh, which was cool, buf teh satellaview experience is alfo something worth seeink as wew.

Alfo, I first learned aboot the satellafiew from Radical Dreamers, teh weird chrono trigger/cross visual novel thing, hehe

the Satellaview my beloved. if you haven't considered it already highly recommend getting the MSU1 fandub versions of the BS Zelda games - the subs can't quite replace the live audio feel imo (also for BS Zelda 1 especially, because that one's various translations/mods/etc. doesnt include the always-rolling subs of the AST translation so you lose out on some important info like when a Thing is about to happen)
