Just saw A Strange Loop and it kinda blew my mind. Reminded me a lot of Torch Song Trilogy and Company in the best possible way.

I don't think I've ever seen a Broadway show more at tension with it's audience, an actual realization of what a queer black musical looks like (and not "queer" and "black" as marketing for a certain kind of liberal affluent white person who goes to Broadway musicals) that is genuinely really thorny and touching a kind of taboo that isn't always allowed for these kinds of musicals. No happy ending, no real absolving, just a portrait.

We had an obstructed view seat cause we are poor and it was kind of a shame, cause this is a show that uses it's entire stage but am really really glad we got to see it before it closed.

This play also has one of the most scathing takedowns of Tyler Perry ever to be put to the stage, and at the end of the show because it is Red Bucket Donations season on Broadway, the cast gave a little "Fuck Hugh Jackman and his little shirtless sixpack fundraising strategy, give us your money you guilty conscious allies" and it was great. If you can see this I would extremely highly recommend.
