Me and a friend of mine, @LurkinPandaNSFW, had a little friendly competition where we took 3 months to build a game, we'd come together and see what we did with our lead writer and see where the cards fell.

I chose to rebuild my passion-project game, FORGE, from the ground up!

Here's the progress I made over my holiday weekend and an overall view of what I made. On December 1st, I'll post a playable build for you to take for a spin yourself!

Check out my previous posts here in chronological order.

World Items

^^ Just imagine hearing a really satisfying 'pop' noise.

The first order of business was upgrading woodworking from v1. In chatting with my wife, who has more hours combined in Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing than I probably do in any MMO I've ever played (It's close though,) she mentioned that it'd be cool to have items pop out and a really satisfying noise when you pick them up after tapping a Resource Node such as a tree or mining node.

Woodworking

Woodworking is a feature that is relatively simple in its design in the context of FORGE. With the new foliage, I really wanted to showcase and put a spotlight on it.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints and poor scheduling, I couldn't put in the Woodworking UI (Though I probably could in the like... 2? 5? days before 12/1???) but the act of getting your axe (with the subsequent quest!) and hittin' trees and gettin' loot were in place relatively fast. I had a SPICY new animation to go with it too.

Satisfied with this, the entire flow is now in the game - from getting your axe to chopping down whatever trees you want. There's a whole bunch of animation issues (and the tree only falls one direction for now) but I'll resolve those in the coming days.

Conclusion

It's been a whirlwind 3 months. I've had a lot on my plate with my day job and....other life things.... that it's been really difficult to put this one together. I'm so insanely proud of how much I've done in such short time. FORGE v1 was made in a year and a half. v2 was made in 3 months and I'm genuinely blown away with the progress.

When I launch the v2 Demo, I'll also include v1 so you can see for yourself the difference between v1 and v2 and maybe hopefully give me some feedback!
