and I think the reasons have shifted slightly over time, but only a little. As a mecha show, it's already just inherently kind of cool, but I'm of the opinion that the mecha action is not the show's strong suit. Especially compared to other things that Sunrise have produced, C:G is kind of... quaint?

Side Note: I love that the mechs move in a unique way, as pointed out by @LowPolyRobot in a recent chost. The grapple hooks and funny little roller skates they all have are great.

But I think the real strength of the show is character. And for me personally, it's Lelouch that really sells it. When I first saw it ages ago, I was super into this angsty teen boy who used not just supernatural powers, but his unmatched wit to affect change. He filled the same sort of niche as a character like Light from Death Note, but in a way that was so much more fun. He fulfilled a power fantasy for a young egg that wasn't physically impressive, and lacked self-esteem.

When I look at Lelouch now, what I see is the most flamboyant anime villain of his day. He is reveling in his power, he is putting on a show, he is unabashedly loving the hold he has on people. And this dude is the protagonist, you get to root for him! How much fun is that?! He behaves like a deranged supervillain, but you know he's trying to create a brighter future for everyone. He's the best.

Meanwhile, Suzaku out here acting like the world's most dedicated neo-liberal. "I cAn ChAnGe tHe sYsTeM FrOm thE InSIdE." Get out of here with that weak shit.

I just finished code geass (finishing up akito the exiled part 5 just now!) and agree with this so much. in particular,

When I look at Lelouch now, what I see is the most flamboyant anime villain of his day.

I joked about the constantly with the friend I was watching it with. I always talked about Lelouch's theater kid energy. And it's super fun to watch!

I also think that he has a humanism anchoring him that Light does not. I like how that reflects in the various personal conflicts he deals. But fundamentally, Lelouch understands "punch nazis." And is so damn flamboyant about it.

Yes! Light's arc is more akin to, like, Walter White. He just becomes increasingly corrupted by the power he wields. Lelouch never gave up his ideals, even while giving the appearance of ruthless pragmatism.

I still haven't seen Akito, but it's on the list. I gotta watch Resurrection first.

Its been an age and I need to rematch it, but I definitely agree with everything said about Lelouch. His Japanese VA is also phenomenal in the role and sells it SO hard.

I think season 1 has some strong mech moments, honestly. I love the moments of city combat, like at the very beginning where lelouch guides the pre-black knights through ambushing Brittania. Like you said, the roller skates combined with slash harkens as grappling hooks make them super unique theres a lot or cool moments in regard to it. As do(to me) the hunchback design, reminiscent a bit of the machines in eureka seven.

Its season 2 that for me the mech fights weaken a bit to me, when they trade roller blading through cities and setting up complex ambushes, with everyone just kinda flying in the air and waiting for any of the named characters to fire a big laser that destroys 1000 at a time, because they all have giant lasers now.

The final duel between suzaku and kallen was legit though, thats the best memory of a season 2 fight i have
