As my first attempt to actually get out of the house and meet people, I went to a Queer Game Night at my local library. I only noticed that it was scheduled last night, and it prompted me to actually set a wake-up alarm for the first time in ages. It was listed as 'family friendly', so I was a little worried it would just be a bunch of kids. But when I walked in, it was all older folks (well, 20+ anyway). They were super friendly, and welcomed me in to a round of Uno. Some kids did eventually show up as well. It was lovely. Everyone was a huge nerd, just like me.
I made two incredible discoveries while talking with these local queers. One, this was the first 'family' queer game night, but they ran a regular 'no kids' version of the event every wednesday. So this is actually a thing I can come back to week after week. I can get to know these people.
Second, a number of them are starting a local Queer Council to promote queer events and create spaces for queer people in my town. They had their first meeting tonight as well, and I'm so glad to know that queer folks are organizing in a real way here. I'm fucking thrilled.
