When I was watching Evangelion, I didn't really understand why the show was so vicious about ripping Shinji apart at the seams constantly. Then I watched Mobile Suit Gundam and I too felt the urge to make an entire media franchise about how bad Amuro sucks and how much he should suffer about it.

Amuro Ray is a perfect case study in how a guy can be profoundly shaped by unbearably traumatic conditions and still have it be clear as day that he was going to end up unbearable no matter what happened to him

in reply to @nex3's post:

It has always been fascinating how just due to timing of stuff being readily available in the US so many of us had Eva as our introduction to giant robot anime when that show is such a massive deconstruction of everything that came before it, it's like if Twin Peaks was your introduction to murder mysteries

So, there's a lot of scuttlebutt about if the compilation movies are good entry points and I generally say "no". They're too condensed and don't show a lot of the best stuff. But they are extremely important to the Japanese fandom as they're kinda what saved Gundam from complete obscurity (though they were really only made because BL fanfiction of Amuro and Char had gotten really popular among female fans from what I understand.)

I would generally say just watch like the first 10 or so episodes and see how you feel. It won't be the full breadth but should give you a good idea.
