also:

last night we went to a part of the creek we hadn't been to before, specifically to birdwatch at dusk. had the closest sighting of a Great Blue Heron yet, flying out of a tree right in front of us, croaking the whole time. later, a very large owl flew directly over our heads. I only noticed because I turned toward a small chirping call behind me, and there was the owl, silently gliding over us.

all my dreams last night were about birds. I woke up and immediately wanted to go outside and look at more birds. I'm totally birdpilled.

Our complex has a very large pond that's partially visible from our window/balcony. It supports an ecosystem of fish, turtles, and many, many birds. I bought a guide to local water birds to better identify everything I can. Here's what I've seen so far, with apologies that I don't have a fancy camera that can capture long distance photos.

House Finches
Loads of 'em! They forage in the trees, and some even nest in the parking garage. We've watched them grow up into adorable fledglings. Josie has pics of them, ask her.

Sparrows - probably Chipping
Less common than the finches, but I've seen a few.

Grackles
Obviously. We love a grackle.

Doves
Whatever kind lives around here, very common.

add Green Heron to the list. saw something around the size of a killdeer (who are still hanging around) but a much darker color. it was the stubbiest little heron! I think he's hunting.

it's incredible how the more I look, the more unique species I see. I'm so in love with birds.
