Bluesky is a huge improvement over twitter

But it's engagement loop is still fundamentally the same

Which is actually good for putting stray thoughts or creations out into the world! Especially having a following of fans of that!

But somewhere for deep introspection or connection it is not

Tumblr almost succeeds, but constantly shoots itself in the foot due to its moderation, bot and management problems (not to mention all the terfs)

Masto just feels like the whole Twitter/Bluesky thing but with in-groups (the vibes are very high school)

I had already cut down my social media usage and reclaimed a lot of my pricacy by moving deep meaningful things to CoHost

But now with that shutting down in a few days, I'm likely just going to be far less present on social media going forwards

I'll still be plenty social in my usual places like picarto streams and to a much lesser extent group chats, but I think only a little of the feed style socials is good for me

in reply to @MewMus's post:

The promise of social media is that I can share my work with lots people and it can get traction whilst connecting me with my peers and their work. It even sometimes achieves this which is why it's addictive!

The reality though of most social media is interpersonal drama, parasocial toxicity and a general lack of nuance. There are so many micro rituals in posting etiquette that if you fail you will be punished. People say it's "Twitter brained" but I've honestly seen it on all of them. No one wants to grow and even fewer will accept change, neither is supported by the systems in place.

Its hostile by default and you kinda just need to "post through it" which tbh I just don't have the energy for...

I sympathize and honestly agree with most everything said here. I'll maintain a Bluesky simply for the sake of reaching people if absolutely needed but... I feel no reason to subject myself to bad brain and numbers and algorithms. Literally zero desire to start posting on any of the other social media options.

Yeah...

I'm going to keep posting art everywhere as that was my entire initial draw to socal media. But I'm mostly just going to use bluesky otherwise as a dumping ground for stray thoughts.

It's now busy enough that I can't really keep up with what's happening with everyone I'm following (and I'm not following that many!) and my more thoughtful posting would be far better suited to a blog which I don't know if I have the inclination to run.
