Discord pushed an update for it's Linux desktop app that is only available in pure tar ball or as a Ubuntu optimized Deb package

It's currently broken on my openSUSE install in every install-able form I can find... so short of me compiling the software from source (I don't want to do that) I guess I get to wait until some poor soul (not from discord) ports it to the repositories I actually use

This shit shouldn't be hard... Discord is abandon ware at this point on Linux. Like I knew it was bad... but if I'm going to be having to run my client in a chrome tab for full functionality at all times already, I may as well be on a chromebook or smartphone

I know someone will fix this in a few days, but like FFS, there is no way in hell I'd be able to get everyone to move away from Discord, despite terrible policy bs and the constant fear of various scams/hacks, but like I have genuine disdain for the app and company at this point

If modern software keeps moving the way it has been, I may end up going "fuck it" and becoming a Samsung Dex user or something, I don't know at this point, god I hate venture capital funded orgs

I hated it since I was invited to a server for the first time and had to discover what it even was. It was not a ‘server’, it was a meta-room of rooms.

I hate it because it is a web app in a browser container. I hate it because it does not have an open client API; you cannot write your own, clean, client for this monstrosity. Yes, I know about Ripcord. It sucks. The web version also sucks. I just want something relatively plain and easy. And most importantly customisable; speaking of which, I hate Discord's new typeface. Especially when you mix Cyrillic with Latin. I hate that you can only choose between their two colour schemes and consequently that every single server expects that you use the dark theme and thus role colours are very often unreadable when using the light one.

I hate it because as mentioned above everyone is on it despite how hostile it is to users. I hate that you cannot have a neat tree of channels you are interested in, with unread channels across all these so-called servers clearly marked so. I hate that it keeps trying to upsell me when I paste images over 8 MB in size. I hate the Nitro thing on my DM conversations list; I do not need that stuff.

I actually, and this a very tastes differ thing, really dislike whatever they call ‘emoji’ because very often people in large servers love to post those frogs and similar stuff.

I dislike their mobile app, actually! You could argue that it is kind of better than the desktop/web client, but it manages to break the Share interface on both Android and iOS! That in itself is an achievement! To elaborate on this: on both platforms, once you confirm sharing and the text/image goes over to Discord, the Share user interface does not go away like it does with every single other app, How did they accomplish this? I have no clue.

I hate that Discord is assimilating into itself entire forums and wikis, locking knowledge behind the wall of mandatory server participation. You cannot search these from outside, but a lot was said about this already.

I hate that there is no way to keep up-to-date local, not server-side, logs of conversations. IRC, XMPP, Matrix etc. all solved this ages ago. You lose access to Discord, you lose all of your conversation history with everyone.

I hate the (prevailing on Discord) ‘it's faster to ask’ culture too.

I could go on and on.

Oh and entire communities of open-source developers are now on Discord and that fills me with more dread.

even if the dozens of other reasons didn't exist i would still hate it with the white hot fire of a thousand suns if only because crunchyroll got rid of their forums in exchange for a discord server which is like WHAT?? all those YEARS of posts GONE.

also if you host information on discord or make me go to your discord to get docs etc you are going straight to hell.

also if you have the update problems on linux: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Discord#Discord_asks_for_an_update_not_yet_available_in_the_repository

in reply to @MewMus's post:

The only viable alternative atm is Guilded, who to my understanding actually have pretty decent Linux support

But they are owned by the Roblox guys so unless Discord fully shits the bed I don't want to trade one bad company for another...

Guilded is very capable, full of features, probably better than Discord at least from what I tried. And apart from not having my close friends on there, yeah Roblox is disgusting.

I don't know... maybe a federated system isn't so bad when it comes to direct messaging, but there is still the lack of features when it comes to screen sharing.

There's always snappy, if you lean that way.

The only good thing Snap ever did for me was let me know just how invasive discord wants to be on my system, in the name of "desktop integration". I don't really care if people on discord know I'm playing a game or not, and I'd rather it not try and see a full process list in the name of doing that, so I just spin up a separate browser instance for it now.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I remember that chost from before now. This method mentioned will probably make streaming from discord broken or very resource heavy. :(
