Every time I've heard an explination of social deduction games like Are You a Werewolf, Secret Hitler, and Among Us, I hear them compared to something called "Mafia". The whole reason I write this is that "Mafia" to me was a playground game I played as a kid that was nothing like those games. Instead it was a sign calling game like Rock Paper Scissors for 2+ players where players took on the role of mafiosos in a shootout, aiming to be the last one standing.

It was played in rounds, and each round every player simultaneously called one of three signs: Load, Shoot, or Protect. Load, called by pointing up into the air, gave the player a bullet. Shoot, called by pointing at another player, would shoot at that player, consuming one of your bullets and killing (eliminating) them if they didn't call Protect. Protect, called by crossing your arms in front of your body, prevented you from being shot but did nothing else.

There was also a ObviousRulesPatch in the form of Super Shoot, which was the same gesture as Shoot but you just said the different name. Super Shoot costs three bullets but ignores Protect, which prevents Protecting every turn to force a stalemate.

The cool thing is that it was typically played with a rhythm to it, with a typical count of "1... 2... 3... !" that kept repeating on a ready pace. This added an element of quick thinking since if you didn't call a sign at the right time, you couldn't do anything that turn and were vulnerable if someone shot you.

Yes, ties where the last players all shot each other simultaneously were common.

I don't know if anyone even played a similar game to this as a kid, but I have pretty fond memories of it.
