Look my new favorite game isn't gonna be announced in a gaming show, it's gonna come from seeing a 5000 word post on here by a trans woman named jackie-the-nutter

My favourite games of all time mostly come from either funny YouTube videos or friends telling me "dude play this fucking game it's so sick" (Ultrakill, Guilty Gear, Minecraft, Geometry Dash, Fortnite, Warfork)

Seeing YouTubers and gamers in general say things like “Lies of P is so close to fromsoft soulslikes that it borders on PLAGIARISM” drives me insane cuz these same folks would SHIT THEMSELVES if they saw the 90s arcade fighting game boom or all the “Doom-likes” after Doom hit the scene

Gamers are so fucking corpo-brained I that they’ll sick themselves on anything they see as competition for their favorite brand. I LOVE fromsoft and their games but I also want to see other devs take a crack at the action-RPG subgenre (aka soulslikes) and we can’t get that oh so important “originality” without giving devs room to be a lil derivative in some ways (also is it derivative or are these simply genre tropes/expectations?)

Also come on if no one else, not even fromsoft, is gonna make a bloodborne 2 despite everyone BEGGING for bloodborne 2, why the fuck are you gonna clutch your pearls when one dev says “fuck it, WE’LL make bloodborne 2”.

If a game dev studio is able to create something similar to a beloved game to the point where it's nearly or is on par with what it's inspired by then like... good?? It's not plagiarism to wear your inspiration directly on your sleeve and to create something as a love letter to the genre or game. Creating something using something that lays out a solid framework as a template is just a good idea? How many games have used points, lives, crafting, survival, skill trees, stamina in their design? Not every game needs to reinvent the wheel, sometimes you can just take what works and make something good lol.

Ultrakill is one of my favourite FPS games of all time and when it first came out I fucking hated how everyone was comparing it to Doom 2016 and Eternal. It is NOTHING like Doom.

Ultrakill has way more verticality and movement options compared to Eternal. There's slide jumping, slam conversion, dash jumping, you can ride on your rockets like a skateboard, you can pull yourself to enemies or pull enemies to you, you can;

  • Flip a coin into the air
  • Use the Knuckleblaster to launch it into the skies
  • Flip another coin in the air
  • Switch to the Malicious Railcannon
  • Shoot at the second coin
  • The second coin snaps to the first coin, and the first coin aims at the nearest enemy's weakpoint, causing a FUCKING NUKE

The few things that Ultrakill has that matches Doom Eternal are there because Hakita knows what good game design is. You heal yourself when you get close to an enemy. Your alt-fires are variations on your weapon instead of just zooming in or being more accurate. You can mix and match what alternate styles you have to choose the playstyle you want.

But it's not Doom. It never will be.
