I wanna eventually make a more well thought out blog post abt this but
With twitter's incoming changes and having a lot of basic functions locked behind Blue, I really wish artists would take the time and effort to find a place outside of twitter to spend their time and efforts on.
I know I sound like a broken record at this point but I've been seeing so many "please don't judge us for getting Blue, we need it to survive on this site!" But I can't help but feel like, things shouldn't be that way. You don't Need twitter blue, what you really need is to put your efforts elsewhere and update your twitter adjacent to your own site/somewhere else.
(added a read more since it seemed a bit long)
I know twitter, for artists specifically, fills this nice space online where not only can we connect with fellow creatives, but also be available for potential clients and jobs. It's one of the many reasons simply moving to an artist specific website isn't viable for artists looking for clients. It's rough and i completely understand why people are reluctant to leave it.
But with how awful the changes are, I feel like artists really really need to stop putting all their money and effort on one site that is only going to ask for more from you. It will bleed you dry before you see any real benefit, and if you already benefit nicely from twitter without blue, don't cave into wasting your money on it and start investing that theoretical twitter blue subscription into something else.
I know for many artists choosing one location to be at (online) is the easiest because, well, it's exhausting being everywhere (additionally though, I don't believe you actually need to be everywhere, but be good about making it very clear what social platforms you are on.) All the more reason to put your efforts onto either a personal website (not a portfolio!) or a nice landing page with all the information someone could need to look at your comms or check out the spaces you're at.
