With discord doing it's discord thing (bad) It makes me wish every day that the FFXIV community didn't revolve around having everything be on discords.
I don't mean like, its just the modders or something, i mean EVERYTHING.
Resources for literally any content is always stuck behind a discord.
The fact that someone, unironically, last month told me "well you only really need like 6 discords for all your FFXIV needs" is so??? awful to me like
SIX WHOLE DIFFERENT DISCORDS??
Especially after time after time hearing about random big XIV discords imploding over egos or personal drama leaking out into the server.
Even the dedicated websites to XIV content can't help but be tied down to discord. One of the only resources outside of discord (and reddit) for finding a group for raiding still requires you to join their discord in order to get pings for any listing replies.
Even the Balance (a big discord for all of FFXIV raiding) that has a website so that, theoretically, people wouldn't need to join the discord will still do all their updates via discord and then maybe update their site later. (ironically the site that updates raiding info for FFXIV as soon as they can isn't even a FFXIV website, It's Icyveins. the website that mainly does WORLD OF WARCRAFT raiding info. I know WoW gets made fun of for being a boomer mmo among many things but, the one "boomer" thing i'm still glad the WoW community does is keep information websites up to date and still running, even if they look dated.)
I think the only other xiv discord i'm still in is the housing discord, but even then I feel like a lot of the info could just be put onto a website. The number of times the moderators of said discord get exasperated at having to answer questions (which is what the discord is for...) is very telling. I don't think the moderators there are bad people or anything, but it's very telling how much like, all the stress of running the discord is when you could just simply run a website with all the info readily available and not locked behind channels that you have to click roles for from a bot that breaks constantly.
I've seen so many excuses for not wanting to move to websites and they're all so like, nothing!
" Paying for a website will cost too much " : So does paying for discord nitro. The amount of $$ spent on discord nitro to boost a discord server or to have stickers and avatar decorations could easily go into hosting.
" Website will take more time to build " : The amount of time you save yourself from getting annoyed at people asking the same question over and over again or having to manually assign roles and fix channels because a bot breaks or goes offline feels like it could be much better spent building a website.
" A website will take too much effort to make look nice " : It doesn't have to look super fancy, it just needs the information on the site. just look at Petopia for WoW. It's pretty barebones and has been that way for years, but it has all the info you need.
man i dunno i just wish the xiv community wasn't allergic to working together for information or working on a website instead of being catty towards each other and splitting off into discords that will also end up imploding because of drama or something ughh
