the thing about writing in the Battletech universe is it helps if you lean into the "all pilots are nobles, a 'Mech is like a suit of armor in the European middle ages".
make them weird polymath inventors. make them hobbiest scientists advancing science in ways too powerful to go "ok but like. where the fuck did you learn math this way" (setting back science for fifty years). make them have an extreme and perverse interest in something otherwise completely meaningless that everyone tries to convince of their folley until they vindicate themselves.
write mercenary wins/losses against competitors as if it's court intrigue. I guess gundam already did this
