in reply to @crepe's post:

I've been thinking about tagging and NSFW results as well, though in a different direction -- posts tagged with character names. I know this isn't quite as general as what you're talking about, but, it is a little frustrating when I want to seek out SFW art of a character I like, and the tag for said character is 75% porn.

Anyway, this all got me thinking: I wonder if it would be feasible for cohost to modify the search/bookmark functionality to skip over loading silenced posts, or even NSFW posts within a search, to get around the problem of a search page loading with nothing.

That being said, I don't want to put all of the load on cohost...and I agree that as far as tagging goes, there probably isn't any need to be so heavy-handed with the tags -- When I first started posting Hedgehog's Dilemma here, I was tagging it under "#hedgehogs", but eventually I made the decision to remove it because, well, it occurred to me that people might be browsing the tag for actual images of hedgehogs.

Either way, I'm glad you spoke up about this! I have to imagine other people are experiencing this on varying degrees, so I'm sure people are relieved that it isn't just them, so to speak.

(Commenting on this because this also annoys me and I wanna rant about it)

It's most definitely the most annoying facet of trying to use the website so far. I decided to follow the art tag because when I had been looking at it it was mostly cutesy pixel art, however now every time I open up my bookmarked tags it's exclusively porn. When I open up my bookmarked tags I feel like my only options are to unfollow the art tag, or to continuously refresh the page and block every single tag that might run the risk of having it show up. I feel like there has to be an easier solution, but when the only two readily available options are 'completely cut this content out' or 'spend an inordinate amount of energy curating my feed' it saps all the energy out of the idea of trying to look at content on the site.

The part that annoys me the most about it is that when I open up the tag its also almost always super niche shit, which makes me feel even more like the only solution is unfollowing the art tag because it just makes me think "I can't possibly predict what will come up," to the point where I can't open up my bookmarks tab because I know I'll just get frustrated. It's not like I don't want 18+ content in my feed, I just hate it when it feels like my feed is exclusively 18+ content.

this honestly sounds like a pile of feature requests phrased like a "please don't do X because this feature is missing"

search should allow you to search for more than just one tag. search should let you filter out 18+ results, or filter out specific CWs (though the CW usage situation is way weirder than the tag situation right now...) and also if a tag is not visible it should be skipped in the search, you shouldn't see blank pages ever because it'd look like you hit the end of the search listing.

part of the reason tags are used the way they are now, including in that space, is because of how they're used on other sites with more robust tagging. the idea of "tag everything" is in place with usage here, and it actually makes a fair bit of sense for trying to find a post here again, since you can only search by tags! if you want to search by text, you have to use an outside engine. and honestly, I think that's a good thing, and that in many cases what you're recognizing as "niche fetish listings" is in fact just, listing tags of what is in the image.

I definitely agree that with how limited search is right now, this is annoying. but I'd rather the features exist, than that we adjust everything we do, and make certain types of post second-class because a lot of people don't want them showing up in searches. I don't want a return to the days of people creating special tags on tumblr because it didn't allow 18+ filtering in either direction. I want tag search that works for us.

yeah. it's a weird place because it's like, great, but

there's been a few tags that I've seen return almost entirely fetish porn contents that on some level i just want to say "just fucking tag it with the slur, those do not mean the same thing" about
