when people are like "oh my god you need to read this book, it's like it was written for you!", and when I read the description I go "you're right, that does seem extremely My Thing", but when I actually read the first chapter, it's like I've bitten into something rotten, and the prose actively repulses me.

Hate it.

Like, I'm by no means a good writer.
Far from it, even.
But if reading your sentences feels like driving a constantly stalling car, that shit is exhausting, and if the entire first page gives off that impression? I... don't really feel any uh, drive to keep reading, sorry.

Had a conversation with someone, maybe a year back? Talked about half a dozen SFF writers I'd been reading — pretty heavy skew on women and queer authors — and in return they said they'd been enjoying a book by A Big-Name White Guy In Contemporary SF.

Tried reading it, tried being the word; I'm sure I'd have devoured it as an entertainment-starved 12yo, but I somehow don't have the patience for the heirs of Asimov's prose and character work when I've got choices
